Dr. Weldon, the stalwart and popular Dean of Manchester, was present at a complimentary luncheon given by the Lord Mayor of "Cottonpolis" to Sir Herbert Bccrbohm Tree and his touring company. "Well," said the dignitary of the Church to the eminent actor-manager, during a pause in the formal speechifying, "what have yoju. bo/an doing with yourself this morning in Manchester?" _ "I went for a motor ride round the city and its suburbs, and I lost a bet," replied Sir Herbert. "Shocking, shocking I" rejoined the Dean;'"but may I ask what your bet was?" "I made a bet that we should encounter quite fifty different odors during our spin, and I could only count forty-nine." "Ah ("promptly put in the witty" ecclesisatic; ''you must havo missed the odor ofsanctity."
