In the Magistrate's Court, Waihi, last week, Peter Pctersdn, of Waikino, board-ing-house-keeper, was charged with keeping- liquor for sale on the 10th February. This case was a sequel to a recent raid made on defendant's premises at Waikino. A hotel carrier gave evidence of tho delivery between September 2 to February 10 of six cases of spirits, one. case wine, two kegs ale, and two cases stout, addressed to members of tho Petersen family. ' _ The Cleric of the Court stated that notifications of consignments of liquor covering 62 gallons of alo and stout, one bottlo of gin, twelve-gallons of whisky, to tho Petersen family had been received during the last three months, of which amount 23 gallons wore consigned to members of Peterson's family other than defendant, The defence was directed to show that the liquor was used by members of the household for private consumption oijly. Defendant swore that eight persons, members of his family and household, consumed between thorn four gallons of ale and eight bottles of whisky per week'. The Magistrate said he doubted the truth of the assertions with reference to the consumption pf liquor by servants; and considered it an unreasonable explanation that such a large quantity of liquor should be required for family consumption. Defendant was convicted and fined £35, with costs £2 4s. . • • At Taumaranui a man named Burroughs, accused of sly-grog selling, did not appear when called in Court, and was fined £25. It is understood Burroughs has gone to Sydney.
