That China is awakening in real earnest, every source of'information confirms. A resident of Christchurch, now in the China Imperial Service, has just returned to New Zealand after having, for the pa6t five years, held tho position of traflio-managcr on the Peking-Fungtien railway. This railway, which' is controlled by the Chinese Government, is_ worked under tho supervision of foreigners. Tho lino had been largely built with British capital, and the chief officials aro Britishers. Tho traffic-manager is a Queenslander, and most of the traffic inspectors have come from the railway service in that State. The railway is a most np-to-dato one in every respect, in one item being ahead of New Zealand, namely, automatic couplings. The gauge is the standard one, 4ft BJin, and while most of the locomotives are of English and American manufacture, the rolling stock was built in the Chinese works at Tangshan. The railway workshops there aro very large and are exceptionally equipped.
