THE EARTHQUAKE.

FELT IN VARIOUS PARTS. (Per 'Pbebb Association.] CHRISTCTIURCH, Feb. 26. , A shock' of earthquake was felt at an early hour, this morning. There was more of a swaying motion than • the usual jerk ; and the shock was not severe enough to cause any damage. ; WELLINGTON, Feb. 26. At a quarter to four this morning the gale which had been raging all night stopped for a few minutes and a sharp double earthquake was experienced. Then the wind blew again as hard as over. So far no damage is reported as the result' of the quake. WAIROA, Feb. 27. A sharp earthquake occurred at 3.42 on Sunday morning. No damage was done. WANGANUI, Feb. 27. The earthquake was felt with some severity at Wanganui, but no. damage resulted. BLENHEIM, Feb. 27. A sharp shock of earthquake about 3.40 a.m. on Sunday morning was preceded by a heavy rain squall.. Tho shock lasted soine seconds. The heavy rain that lias fallen was welcome to farmers and will help along the rape wonderfully. It is still overcast and threatening rain.

The earthquake shock was very plainly experienced in Palmerston at 3.45 on Sunday morning. It was preceded by a slighter shock and by a loud rumble. The heavy rumble and the severity of the shock created some alarm. No actual damage .has so far been reported. Both quakes were well sustained, the last and heavier one especially so. The quakes appeared to bo travelling from the south-oast. The weather at the time was still and close, and during the early part of the night the rather fresh sou'-wester that was blowing, was varied by several humid gusts. ~
