BOXING.

. THE LOCAL TOURNAMENT,

It is hardly necessary for us to remind patrons of the tournament to be held in the Opera, • House- this evening under the auspiccs of the Pahnerston • North Boxing Club, which has arranged a very lino and comprehensive programme for the occasion. The abilities of such men as Shields, Tracey, Treweek, and Ellis are too well known to need stressing, whilst such sterling performers as Dalziell, Childs, Clifford, Waters, Bason, and Liez can be relied upon to provide excellent bouts. The idea of holding a novice competition has boon approved, an opportunity thus being afforded young members of the Club of testing their skill. The tourney will commence at 8 o'clock sharp, Dr. O'Brien, president of the Manawatu and New Zealand Boxing Associations respectively, presiding, whilst Mr W. F. Hankins, secretary of tho Manawatu Boxing Association, will carry out the duties of M.C. Messrs Mahon and Randall will have control of the watch, with Mr Louisson in charge of the gong. Tho ring was erected this- morning, the padded floor especially receiving special attention from the general supervisor, Mr Ike Fake.

Ellis and his . trainer, H. Richards, and Ben Tracey, accompanied by his brother Tim, arrived in town _by the New Plymouth express this morning, and were met by the Club's officials at the station. Clifford and Welsh also arrived this morning, whilst.G. Williams, with his pupils Dalziell and Jarvis, arrived in company with McGlone (Greymouth) this afternoon. At tho. Club's rooms last evening the local competitors put the finishing touches to their training operations, and all announced themselves in rare fettle for this evening. Numerous visitors are expected, including Dr. Napier McLean _ (referee to tho Wellington Boxing Association), who will, if possible, come up by the 9 o'clock train from the Empire City, in order to witness the Shields v. Ellis match. This should be the best bout of the night. A bumncr house will doubtless greet the Club ~at the Opera House this even ing, when all profits derived will be spent in the equipment of the Club's gymnasium. The prices are 4s, 2s, an.i Is. with no early doors. Mr Ike Fake will referee, with J. Incson and R. Jones as oflicia'l seconds. Several ladies have expressed thenintention of being present.
