CRICKET.
(By "Spectator.")
The weather "was perfect for cricket yesterday afternoon, and the Sportsground vvas well patronised with cricketers. For so early ill the season the pitches are extremely fast, and were the cause of much favourable comment. During the afternoon a scratch match was played, the form shown by the players being good considering the beginning of the season. Wednesday cricket this year promises to be interesting, several of the country districts having intimated that they will enter for the competition. Phoenix and Post Office are certainties for the season's play, whilst Terrace End and Albion have yet to decide on the question. Rumour hath it that a new club is about to be formed in town. C. Goldspring is at present in Sydney, and his absence will be a great loss to Manawatu cricket, as lie is a consistent all-round performer. The first meeting of. the Cricket Association will be held next Wednesday evening, when much important business cOmes up for discussion. The question of whether a coach should be secured is much discussed by players. It is thought that if a subscription list is taken up among townspeople and, say, a shilling levy made on the players all round, the expenses of a competent man could be collected. It is not essential that an Englishman should be sought; there are any amount of first-class men in Australia who would be glad to take the district in hand for a season.
