MANAWATU DRAINAGE BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Manawatu Land Drainage Board was held to-day. There were present Trustees Sanson (chairman), Collis, Voss, Clausen, Garrity/ and Prouse. A letter was received from Mr R. L. Levin regarding the rating of his own and Mrs Levin's land, and asking the Board to clear out the Taonui stream.

It was decided that Mr Levin'e previous offer of land for a drain be accepted, and he be informed that the line of drain diverting the water from Ins drain into Taonui will be done during the ensuing summer ; the creek to be cleaned out up to that point. . Mr R. B. Knudson wrote complaining that the horses attached to. the camp at the end of the BunnythorpeKairanga road were destroying the drains in the vicinity. It wad'decided that notice be served on the men camping there to remove the horses at once.

F. O'Leary and B. Mahoney wrote stating that an oversight had been mado in connection with tlie tender for the drain from Longburn ■to the Karere-Kairanga road, and also that the Engineer would not certify for work done. —The Engineer said he had taken the levels of the work in No. 1 Line drain, and it had not been taken down to the required depth. Mr Eiddiford had also served a notice on/ the. men to cease work, and it had been complied with by them. The opinion wap expressed by members of the Board that the notice served on the* men was not legal, and that the men need not have left off work.

The men waited on the Board and asked for a settlement. They said that the stoppage of the work had entirely upset their calculation's, and they , could not now go on with it. If they were paid for the work done they would be satisfied.

The Chairman said thdt they must accept the Engineer's report on the subject, and there was nothing for it but for them to finish the work.

The Engineer said the men had already had £125 on account of the work, and they wished for £95 more. It would take £160 more to finish the work assujjiing it was taken through Riddiford's. .

Eventually the Chairman and Trustees Voss and Collis were appointed a committee to settle, the matter. '.-_.

Formal notice will be given the/men to proceed with the work. . Accounts totalling £110 16s 3d were passed for payment. The Engineer submitted plans of further sections of the Mangaone works through Mr Wood's sections and cutting into Mr Whittaker's section. It was decided to call for tenders for the work from the Rangitikei Line to connect with stream at Richardson's Line, to be in at next regular meeting, the Engineer to obtain consent by owners of lands to be entered.
