(Pee Pbkbs Association.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 4. A' five-roomed house in Vauxhall Road, Devonport, owned by Mr Maxwell, of Ponsonby, and occupied by Mr H. NicholL, was totally destroyed by fire to-night, nothing being saved. Mr NichoTl was alone in the house at the time, his wife being away at Hastings. He was in bed when the fire broke out, and had just time to make his escape in night attire. The furniture was insured in the Victoria Office for £150; the insurance on the house is not available at present. DUNEDIN, Oct. 4. At a meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce to-day a motion was adopted expressing hearty approval of the progress made by the Government with reference to the defence proposals, and trusting that. Lord Kitchener's recommendations be adhered to as closely as possible, also expressing gratification at the retention of the age limit of 25 years notwithstanding that it does not come into force immediately. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 5. The question of the site for South Island training camp for the territorial force came before the South Waimakariri River Board to-day, when a letter was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands which stated that the Government proposed, in return for reserves to be taken from the "Board, the annual rental of which was £673,, to vest in the Board certain rune, the rental of which was £680 per annum. It was decided that the members -of the Board visit the reserves and inspect them. : •
