The police discovered that a boy had purchased, under suspicious circumstances, a cheque book at the bank in a customer's name, and,, with the assistance of the boy, the police watched the accused's movements for some time. It . is alleged that accused was seen to meet the boy . and give him a number of cheques to cash under the eyes of the police, who were present, and who intercepted the boy, and arrested the accused. Sergeant MacKinnon found six cheques fin the possession of the boy, representing a total of £29 ss, and discovered no less than 18 cheques, amounting to £87 15s 6d, in possession of _ accused. All the cheques were signed in the name of H. J. Beech, the Waihi Company's accountant,v and included a private mark and the usual stamp used for wages account.
