SMOKING AND GAMBLING.
DISCUSSED BY AUCKLAND EDUCATION BOARD. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 26. An interesting discussion took place at the meeting of the Education Board relative to the need for instructing children in a knowledge of the evils of smoking and gambling. A letter was received from the Salvation Army stating that an AntiGambling and Anti-Smoking League for the boys and' girls of New Zealand had just been launched, and they desired the Auckland Education Board to allow an officer of the Army to visit the City schools and give a short address to the children on the evils of smoking and gambling. This privilege had been granted in other places and had proved very satisfactory in its results. Mr G. Edgecumbe said there was no doubt that smoking and gambling were growing evile, and no possible j harm could come of acceding to the request made. i , Mr Parr said he realised that the | tobacco habit was a growing evil j amonget the young. Likewise one ; could not fail to be impressed with the dangers of gambling. Mr Harris: Would sharebroking be included in the subject dealt with?. It is one of the worst classes of gambling and is generally patronised by deeply religious people. Mr Parr thought they might defer the matter a fortnight > when the Board would also consider the question of Bible instruction: in schools. This proposal was resolved upon, Messrs Edgecumbe and. Wallace dissenting.
