FARMERS' UNION.
HAWKE'S BAY CONFERENCE. (Per Pbess Association.) NAPIER, May 28. The annual conference of the Hawke's Bay provincial district of the Farmers' Union was held at Hastings yesterday. Three branches were represented. Mr A. L. D. Fraser, who was voted to the chair, in the unavoidable absence of the, president, delivered, an address. Mr Fraser eaid it appeared to him there never was a time in the history of New Zealand when it was more necessary for farmers to unite than at present, and ho therefore considered it was regrettable to see the falling-off of interest in the union in various parts of the Dominion. There was, for instance, still much to do and to watch regarding the land question, specially fn view of tho difficulties that were put in the way of both Europeans and natives settling on the land. Mr Eustace Lane was elected president. Remits agreed to and forwarded to the Dominion Conference included one in favour of co-operative meat freezing by farmers. It was also decided that a eub-committee be formed to wait on local freezing companies and ask them to. classify lambs into three classes, and to advertise A, B, and C grade prices. NORTH CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, May 27. Tho conference of the North Canter'bury Farmers' Union concluded to-day. \ Mr 0. Clothier was elected president, and Messrs R. Evans and F. G. Horrell appointed delegates to the Dominion Conference. Remits from the executive of the Taranaki Farmers' Union and from the Ashburton and Kakaia branches regard; ing alleged improper methods pursued by the State Fire Ofiice in getting business were agreed to. A remit was also agreed to that the Charitable Aid Boards should roceivo fees paid by the licensees of hotels.
