Robert Corkill, bailiff, who was found guilty of the manslaughter of Christopher Smith, wae brought up for sentence today. The Chief Justice- said he would pay attention to the jury's recommendation to mercy. The prisoner was in a weak state of health, and' if he sentenced him to a long term it ; would be sentencing him to death. He would, therefore, pass a lenient sentence of eix months' imprisonment without hard labour. His Honor said he desired to point out to those engaged in the same occupation as prisoner that it was wrong for them to carry firearms.
