ASSAULT ON A YOUNG WOMAN.
A MAN ARRESTED. (Peb Pbbsb Association.) AUCKLAND, May 28. A respectable young married womai from the Bay of Plenty, at present or a visit to her parents, was returning from town between 6.30 and 7 last even ing. As she passed the Supreme Court grounds, within a 100 yards of hei parents' house, she was approached bj a man who threw her violently to the ground. A struggle ensued, and th« woman managed to free herself. In hei flight she met a young girl who stood by her and helped her to attract the attention of two men who' were passing. The latter immediately closed with the man indicated to them as- the assailant, and held him until a constable was summoned. Other passers-by assisted the young woman,' who was in a very distressed state, to her. parents' home. She was very seriously bruised about the body, had an abrasion on the forehead, and her clothes were torn. ATf a late hour last night the young woman was unable to give a' collected account of the outrage, but seemed to be easier. The man arrested gave the name of Alexander McMasters. He is a tall, well-built, well-dressed young man, about 24 years of age. Later. The woman this morning gave a reporter a clear account of the_ occurrence. She stated she was returning from a church bazaar, and was accosted by a man, who rushed .at her and knocked her down. He was a powerful man, but she made a vigorous defence, so that the struggle lasted twenty minutes. She subsequently identified the man brought to her as her assailant. McMasters appeared at the Court this morning and was charged with assault. He was remanded.
