Samson, the shift boss of the British mine at Broken Hill, over-balanced from a staging in the shaft and was dashed to pieces 200 feet below. MELBOURNE, May 26. The annual report of the Colonial Mutual Life Company showed that the volume of now assurances was not quite so large as in 1908, though the fallingoff in business was counter-balanced by a substantial increase in New South Wales. Expenses were reduced by over £11,000, compared with the previous year. Death claims were £15,000 below expectations. The acquisition of the business of the Standard Life Association was likely to prove a considerable advantage in facilitating the industrial branch. The business in force in the industrial branch on December 31 last represented a premium income of over £12,000, the result of 6ix months' work. The actuary's quinquennial report disclosed a surplus of £298,291 left over for disposal.
