GOLF.

THE CORONATION MEDAL.

The first local open competition under tho auspices of the Ladies' Golf Union will take place to-morrow at Hokowhitu., The qualification for competition is that competitors shall have earned a handicap of 25 or under. All competitors will play on their home links on the same day, and the- competition will be against the par of the green, plus their individual handicaps; thue on a course the par of which is 80 a player with a handicap of 20 will try to be "up" on 100 by as many points as possible, and a pfayer with a handicap oi 10 will be similarly playing against a score of 90. On another course where the pa;- is, fay. 75. competitors will in the same way compote against their own particular , par, so that players throughout New Zealand are on the samo footing, their handicaps having been earned on a uniform standard. The only factor probably militating against an even contest will be the weather. Last year on Coronation Medal day perfect weather conditions prevailed from one end of j New Zealand to the other, and some particularly good scores woro handed in, the ! winner being Miss Stephenson, of Nga- > motu (New Plymouth), who only beat Mrs Sharpe, of Nelson, by a fraction, both being 6 strokes "up." The winner (who will be declared when all the return? have been received from the 30 ladies clubs affiliated to tho New Zealand branch of the L.G.U.) will have her name inscribed on the Coronation Medal, which was presented to New Zealand in commemoration of our late King, and will receive a replica of tho medal as a me-

mento. . The order of play and handicaps of tho local ladies eligible to compete are as folio.vs:— Mies Wray 4 and Mrs Innes 11 Mrs Abraham 16 and Mrs A. Strang 25. Mrs Mellsop 19 and Miss Slack 20, Miss Ethel Abraham 25 and Miss Sybil Abrahim 25, Mrs Warburton 24 and Mies McLennan 24. The Hokowhitu greens, whicn havo been somewhat tricky this season, are to be specially cut and rolled prior to tho match, so that the local players, will not be handicapped as against thp rest of tho Dominion.
