SPORTING.

C. Cress has been engaged to ride Wimmera in his future jumping engagements. Sir George Clifford has secured first call on the services of the light-weight jockey C. Emerson, for the 1910-1911 season.

The reason of the withdrawal of the Porirua jumpers from their Northern engagements was that Waione has broken down, Tauira is being spelled, and Playmate is suffering from soreness. A would-be Wellington, purchaser made an offer for Broadsword last week, but Sir George Clifford decided to hold on to the Clanranald colt.

Before the racing started the owner of Caruso reported A. McMillan for refusing to rido that horse after engaging to do so, and the stewards fined McMillan £1. Both the trainers of Miss Stella and Belle Napier were fined £2 for sending their charges late to tho post for the pony race. Three special stewards were appointed to watch the running, but, although there were one or two pretty pronounced case 6, they took no action.

Last year, when he won the Derby with Minoru. he established another record, that being the first time the Great Epsom race had been secured by the reigning Sovereign. He also shared with Lord Rosebery the credit of being the only owner in recent times who had won the Derby on three occasions.
