GENERAL NEWS.

SHOT WHILE MAKING TOAST.

A toasting fork and a piece of toasted bread, it was stated at the inquest, were found under the grate, near which the woman had fallen, who was shot in the back by her husband at Merthyr. Walter Mayes turned the revolver upon himself, and took his own life after killing his wife. The Coroner incidentally alluded to the largo number of people attracted by ideas of high wages to the South Wales coalfield. Mayes was formerly a gentleman's servant. Ho had been engaged in night work • at a local collicry, but seemed to have become dissatisfied with the class of work. A brother from Aberdaro, who identified the bodies, is working in a pit, and was previously a clerk at a London bookstall. A verdict of wilful murder against Walter Mayes was returned, the latter being found to have committed suicide whilst temporarily insane.

AMERICAN BARBERS' CHARGES. Barbers in all the big cities in Amcrica complain that there is a growing tendency on the part of Americans to shavo themselves at home, instead of patronising what Yankees call the "tonsorial artist." This development is attributed not only to the popularity of various safety devices in razors, but also because to shave at home saves time, money, and occasionally disease. Now the tonsorial artists are up in arms, declaring, by way of reprisal, that they will henceforth charge 2s instead of Is, _ which is the customary price of a haircut in the United States. Chicago is leading the way, and New York, as soon as the trade begins to' slacken, will probably follow suit. What with manicuring, boot cleaning, face massage, and electric friction for the head, it is almost impossible nowadays to escape from an American barber under 3s or 4s a visit, so that the new imposition will possibly develop a race of long-haired Americans.
