Mr H. Ross Dix, one of the engineers of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company, Burin ah, and a son of the late Mr H. Ross Dix, of Wellington, is at present visiting his friends in that city. He returns to the East next month. It is stated that Colonel Allen Bell, Commanding the Second Regiment Auckland Mounted Rifles, has been instructed by the Defence Department to proceed to England to undergo a six months' course of training in military duties. Colonel Bell will probably leave the Dominion about the middle of May, and return about March, 1911. Dr. Hardwick Smith, Medical Superintendent of Wellington Hospital, is to be offered the position of medical superintendent in charge of all the instiutions under the control of the now Wellington District Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. These include the Wellington Hospital, Otaki Hospital and Sanatorium, Ohiro Home, and the Infectious Diseases Hospital now being erected. The salary for the new position is £700 per annum with free house.

The Governor leaves New Zealand for Australia, en route for England, on 6th June. After spending a. holiday at Tokaanu, he will visit Rotorua on 6th May, Tauranga on 7th May, Katikati and Waihi on 9th May, and Hamilton on 10th May. His Excellency will then return to Wellington for a Masonic function. Following this wil be a tour of the West Coast of the North Island. Auckland will be his Excellency's port of departure. He wil spend a few weeks in Australia. Mr William Houghton, chicf inspector of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., died at his residence. Wellington Terrace, on Sunday, in his fiftieth year. Mr Houghton had been suffering from typhoid fever. His illness had been causing anxiety to his friends all last week. The late Mr Houghton's wife, died some time ago, leaving him with three children, of whom the youngest was only eight years old. Mr Houghton was for. a long time connected with St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral.
