BENEFIT CONCERT.

To-night a popular benefit concert' will be given in the Opera House in aid of a fund that is being raised to secure the best medical advice procurable for Mr C. Leamington, who is afflicted with blindness. It appears that, about 28 years ago, when a boy of 14, Mr Leamington was having a warm bath. A brother, who was a plumber, had fitted up a shower bath, and in order to give it a trial to see how it would go, yourig Leamington took a cold shower. The result was a shock to his system that brought on a severe illness, and within a week he became quite blind. In the hope of having his sight restored,_ Mr Leamington was sent to Australia to consult the leading specialists there, but' without success. While in Melbourne Mr Leamington was admitted to the Blind Institute, and was taught piano tuning. He subsequently returned to New Zealand, and has earned his living at tuning ever since. He has been a resident of Palmerston North for about 20 years, and is well known amongst the older residents of the town. During the last few years Mr' Leamington has been just able to see a lighted match when held close to his eyes, and this has given him great hope of being able to secure a complete restoration of his sight if he can secure the necessary treatment by specialists. It is 'the desire of a number of local sympathisers to raise a fund to send him to London for this purpose. But he will first be sent to a well-known specialist in Bunedin. for advice, and on this will depend the future action of his sympathisers. It might be mentioned that since he became blind Mr Leamington has lost what little 'property, he had, and he is now without means _ beyond _ his slight earnings from piano tuning. The object being a deserving one, it is hoped the townspeople will assist by attending to-night's entertainment—they will not , only have the satisfaction of knowing they are assisting in a Reserving case, but will receive value in a pleasant entertainment.
