The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., London, under date February 24. 1910, report: — Wool.—There is no fresh feature to report as regards the London market. Advices from the industrial centres at Home and on the Continent are of an encouraging nature, manufacturers generally being well employed, while for tops prices have an upward tendency. A quieter tone is reported in America, and there is a lull in purchases here on account of that quarter. New Zealand Hemp.—At the first part of the period under review a small amount of business was passing at prices which ruled in buyers' favour. Good Fair in dock is selling at £27 and Fair January-February at £25 15s to £25 10s per ton c.i.f. Following this the market became' very depressed, and although holders are 'willing to accept lower prices no business has been done. Wo quote: — Good Fair snot £26 to £26 10s, Febru-ary-April £25 10s, Fair spot £25 to £25 10s, February-April £24 10s to £24 15s, and fair current Manila February-April £24 per ton c.i.f. Tow is in fair request at lower prices, and we quote No. 1 quality £11 15e per ton c.i.f. Cocksfoot. —We have experienced such a wet season, especially in the North, that field work has been entirely suspended, and consequently the market is quite stagnant. Meantime, however, prices remain firm, and we quote 16 to 171b seed at 70s to 72s per cwt c.i.f. Buyers here are not expected to operate in now season until more definite news arrives as to the crop out-turn. Tallow.—There have been four public auctions during tho period under review, and at those the demand has been good, especially for the lower and medium descriptions, which have advanced 9d to Is per cwt. Not much interest has been evident in mutton tallow, and prices ruled in sellers' favour, but at the close with more demand values fully recovered. On c.i.f. terms a large business has been done at prices on a par with those ruling, for "spot" parcels 43j degrees good colour mixed has realised 33s to 33s 9d, ordinary mutton 345, hard sorts up to 355, whilst for good beef, which is not plentiful, up to 34s 9d per cwt c.i.f. has oeen paid. We quote:—Finest mutton 37s to 38s, fair to good 34s to 35s 6d, edible beef 35s 6d to 375, and fair to good 33s 6d to 34s 6d per cwt ex warehouse.
Frozen Meat. —An improved demand has recently been experienced for all descriptions of frozen mutton, and in face of the moderate supplies offering last quotations have been well maintained. There has been a good trade passing in lambs, and for Australian holders have been able to advance prices about ad per lb, while for New Zealand prices remain firm. For the most part chilled beef has been in fair supply, and prices have shown some irregularity,, but latterly, with smaller quantities available, values have been against buyers. In sympathy this week there has been rather more enquiry for frozen eorts at slightly higher rates. We quote :—Canterbury mutton 3£d to 4gd, North Island 3|d to 3ad, Australian 3gd to 3|d, ewes 3gd to 3;jd, Canterbury lamb s£d to sgd, North Island 4?d to s£d, Australian 3-gd to 4gd, A T ew Zealand beef hinds 3£d to 3gd, fores 2|d to 3gd, Australian hinds 3d to sjd, fores 2%<\ to 2gd, River Plate frozen beef hinds 3£d to 3|d. force 2|d to 3&d, chilled hinds 4Jrd to sd, fores 3gd to 3fd per lb Oil' the hooks at Smithfield.
Grain.—There has been little animation in the wheat market, and prices mark a decline of Is to Is 6d per quarter. Even at the lower price there is little demand, operators having adopted a very conservative policy, whilst with free offers from Australia and the River Plato, together with excellent crop prospects in India, a further decline in prices is probable. Not very much hns been done in Australasian for arrival, holders' ideas of values being above the. market hero; 39s per 4801b c.i.f. will buy sailer cargoes of Australian January bill of lading, and '38s 9d per 4801b c.i.f. is tho
price of a handy-sized cargo of New'l South Wales, now loading. Oats arc quiet with an easier tendency ; 18s 6d per 3201b c.i.f. is about the nearest price today for A Gartons for shipment. Beans and peas are quiet at late rates. There is no change in the position of the market for Tasma'nian Maple peas. We quote: —Australian wheat, 41s to 42s 6d per 496 lb; New Zealand wheat (longberried), 39s to 39s 6d per 4961b; New Zealand wheat (shortberried), 38s 6d to 39s per 4961b; New Zealand barley, 25s to 28s per 4481b; New Zealand oats (Sparrowbill), 22s 6d to 24s 6d per 3841b; New Zealand oats, Danish, 17s to 17s 6d per 3201b; New Zealand beans f.a.q., 40s 6d to 41s per 5041b; Tasmanian Maple peas, first quality, 56s to 60s per 5041b ; Tasmanian Maple peas, second quality, 52s to 54s per 5041b; Tasmanian Maple peas, third quality, 48s to 50s per 5041b; Australian flour, 30s 6d to 31s per 2801b.
