EDUCATION BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held last evening. Present: —Messrs F. Pirani (Chairman), and Fraser, Bennett, O'Dea, Aldridge, Purnell. Apologies were received from Messrs Dixon, Spurdle, and Guthrie, M.P. Finance. —The Bank book showed, dr. £2178 13s lid. Resignations. —The following resignations were received: —C. M. Crawford, Z. Wordsmouth, A. Sparrow, A. Wood : man, H. Henderson, A. McDonough, S. C. Gascoigne, B. Hansen. Appointments. —Tho following appointments were agreed to: —J. Carmody (Winiata). Miss Dorset (Rotokare), J. H. Gray (Campbell street), F. A. Bates (Feilding).
Transfers.—The folowing applications for transfers were received: —F. W. Davie, I*\ E. Perry, E. V. Black, N. Dowling, F. G. L. Holland'. Leave of Absence. —The following appliactions fijr leave of absence were granted:—'M. D. Alexander (15 months), C. J. Rashleigh (three months), M. Kuhtzo (one month), C. Hanron (one month), M. McKenzie (one week), and O. Tansey (one month). Music Lessons. —The Board has no power to allow children to attend music lessons during school hours. Cadet Camp.—Mr F. Purnell reported on the Cadet Camp at Wellington.—Received, and it was decided to thank the officers who had chargo of the Cadets, and also to thank Mr Purnell. Accounts.—Accounts to the amount of £1161 16s 5d were passed for payment. Bennett's Siding.—Mr Aldridge was instructed to obtain the names of children
not attending school. Aramoho. —A deputation from the Aramoho School, consisting of Mr F. R. .Field and Mr Vincent, waited on tho Board rc the Board's instructions that the residence should bo vacated by April 30t,h, in readiness for the new teacher.— Tho Chairman explained to" the deputation tho Board's position. Scholarship.—lt was dccided on the suggestion of Mr Braik to offer £10 for a scholarship for proficiency in agricultural science. Free Books.—The Government having offered funds far free books for Standard 111., but being too late this year, it was dccidcd to ask if the grant would hold good for next year, and the matter of readers was referred to Mr Bennett and the Chief Inspector. Sedgebrook.—lt was decided to send a copy of the correspondence rc accommodation at Sedgebrook to the Committee and Mr Hogan. Tho Department refused a grant, considering that the children could go to Aramoho. .Special Payments.—The Department's r^? r J°i s P. ecial Payment of teachers of Y- '-l 3 was referred to the Board's solicitors. College Street.—Mr Croft is to report on glazing. Waituna West.—Application for residence is to be renewed. Kelvin Grove.—The Board can make
no grant for metalling. , , It was decided to rent a building and secure tho services of a male teacher. College Street.—ln response to complaints re overcrowding, it was decided to write to tho Committee suggesting a T?;^?? ement of tho classes. Tho nit was shanked for its letter. Ohakea.—Mr Purnell to report re papering and erection of bathroom. Kairanga.—Tho Committee was informed that the average attendance up to the end of last year did not justify increased accommodation, but an application would bo made to the Government if the averago attendance at the end of tho quarter justified it. Taikorca.—A heater is to be sent.
Fox'ton. —The Board cannot see its way clear to hand the residence over to the Committee. Tho altering of school hours was agreed to, provided school was continued half an hour later. Tho school is to be fumigated. Roes Bequest.—Messrs Moore and Beale advised that tho Board had no claim to the English property. College Street School. —A table showing tho attendance in the different classrooms at this school was laid before the Board, and it was decided to advise tho Committee that Standards V. and VI. should occupy Standard 11. room, and that tho Standard 11. children bo transferred to Standards IV., V., or VI. room, thus relieving the congestion in tho infant room. fc A statement of the receipts? and expenditure for the past year in connection with the Technical Schools and classes controlled **by the Board of Education revealed a very satisfactory surplus in each of the districts, north, middle, and south.
The following proposals for transfers have boon referred to Committees: — Campbell street, Miss Kuhtze, vice Miss McDonogh; Okaiawa, Miss Griffiths; Ohangai, Mr P. Lewis; Rongaiti, Mr E. S. Baker; Mangamahu, Mr R. Armstrong; Taihape, special assistant, Mr S. J. Poole; Feilding, Miss Hunger; Eltham, Mr R. C. Lightbourne; Pohonui, head teacher, Mr E. Coddrington; Turakina, Miss Piercy; Pohangina 3 Miss Scator; St. John's, Miss Clemance; Castlecliff, Miss Gebbie; Stoney Creek, Miss K. Wilson; Manutahi, Mr G. M. Bell; Himatangi (relieving), Mr J. Browning; Hawcra, Mr W. P. Williams ; Meremere, Mr W. Olsen; Otakiko, Miss Johnston; Okoia, Miss A. Manson. College Street School Committee protested that it was a farce to send testimonials and particulars with a proposal to appoint a teacher when one name was sent, and it was decided to point out that the Board was only carrying out the law, and was prepared to consider any representations made by the Committee. The Terrace End Committee wrote protesting against the proposed appointments of Miss O'Donnell and Miss Coombe without the Committee having a list to select from. To accede to this would mean the abandonment of the principle of promotion by merit, which the Board could not agree to. Owing to the confusion in regard to the tools lit the carpentering room at Palmerston, it was decidccl to apply for a set of tools for primary pupils.
