One Sunday's programme in thi. township, he stated, consisted of a football match, a wood-chopping contest, and the puliing down of the old post office. I-Ie added that he would let this story speak for itself. The miners at Waihi have decided that when a fatal accident occurs in a local mine work in that particular niine shall cease until after the funeral. Last week two men were killed in the Waihi Company's mine, and for two days subsequently no underground work was carried on, all the deceased's fellow-em-ployees refraining from labour until after tho remains of the deceased were interred.

A most enjoyable afternoon was spent yesterday when members of the St. John Ambulance Nursing Division were entertained at a garden party by Mrs L. A. "Falling down a bank" seems to be a common form of accident at Taumaranui. A telegram to. an Auckland paper sa y&:—A few days ago Mr E. Watkins, while driving a bush locomotive, fell, with the engine under him, some yards down a bank, and miraculously escaped, without injury beyond a couple of burns on the arm, where- he bore against a hot pipe. Writing in reference to Woodville and. its institutions, a correspondent of the Dannevirke News says,:—The municipal swimming baths at Woodville are a credit to the place. Built close to the town, of concrete, with dressing rooms, diving boards, and high dives, also a water chute, they would bo hard to beat m any part of the Dominion. Thev are about 100 ft. long by 50ft. wide,, with a depth of from 3ft. to Bft.; and they are well patronised by both sexes. At one time before the baths -were opened there were very few children who could swim; but now there is hardly a child, over four or five years that cannot.

_ Judging from the expressions of opinion at Thursday evening's .meeting of the Invercargill Council (says the Southland Times), the idea of a municipallvrun picture entertainment has been abandoned. It is, however, proposed to have a regular picture show in, the theatre on unbooked dates, the venture to be undertaken by some show company connected with the corporation on profit-sharing terms. Already overtures on these lines have been made by three firms. The question was referred back to the Financo Committee, which will at the next meeting either recommend that one of these offers, be accepted, or submit a recommendation that applications be publicly invited from shojv firing for offers and terms, in the form of a tender.

The members of the Waitotara County Council must surely have smiled, remarks the Wanganui Herald, when they received a letter from the Government referring to some noxious weeds on the Council's property. The Council decided to clear the weeds at once, and, with what looks like a delicate piece of sarcasm, resolved also to inform the Government to this effect, says tfee paper quoted: "That it is a pity the Council did not go further, and ask the Department of Agriculture why, when it isso fond of intimating to private eradicating noxious weeds, it does not serve similar notice upon certain other Government Departments, notably the Railway, the Lands, and the Native De-, paftments. When a Government insists 60 strongly and rightly— upon private persons and local bodies keeping down noxious weeds, and also sends round inspectors to see that they do it. it seems rather disgraceful that It should allow its own land to* t>ocome a noxious weed pursery." .

Writing to the Rangitikei -Advocate, £f. r JJ: A -, Bin. says :—"The turnip blight is what is engaging the attention ot and puzzling most farmers, just at present. I think no one seems to know the cause of it, or whether the recent rain will cheek or favour it. Now it has occurred to me that possibly-1 have a clue. I have 15 acres consisting of 7g acres each of Imperial Green Globe and White Pomeranian. Both have had the same amount of manure and cultivation, and were drilled within a day of one another, January 7 and 8. So far the latter are not affected by the blight, and are doing well, while the former have it, though not very bad. My idea is that the Imperial Green Globes, being a winter turnip, were sown a. bit too oarly, and could - not" stand the two little spells of dry.weather we had. This theory may, of course, be quite upset by some other person's, experience. I may say that I have hacj.'' 4 good crops of the I.G.G. when drilled very late up to April 4 last year. The White Pomeranian is a quick grower of ■ better quality than the Mammoth purple top and suitable for early sowing."
