(Per Press Association.) , INVERCARGILL, March 14. While returning from a concert at Orepuki Denis Corkcry, a well-known farmer, aged sixty, got a leg caught on the step of a trap. The horse bolted and ho was dragged round the.paddock. When found by his sons Corßery was dead, his neck being broken. He leaves a wife and grown-up family. DUNEDIN, March 14. Mr Justice Williams sentenced Oscar Strangeby to six months for breaking, entering and theft at Dunedin. Martha Basan, on six charges of theft from dwellings, was sentenced to 12 months', and on a further charge of housebreaking was ordered to be detained as an habitual criminal. NAPIER. March 14. The Magistrate characterised as a deliberate attempt to swindle the case in which James Johnson "took down" a Maori in a railway carriage for £15 or £16 on a show poker hand. NELSON, March 14. John Whitell Claridgc, a bootmaker at Waimea West, was found drowned in the river near Appleby on Saturday evening. He had apparently fallen or been jerked out of a trap. At the inquest the verdict was death by drowning, but no evidence to show how ho got into the water. There is a howling north-west gale, much rain and an enormous sea in the bay.
