I Mr and Mrs W. Strang leave Wellington for Sydney by the Moeraki on April Bth en route for Europe. Mr C. N. Clausen has been appointed a member of the Palmerston North Licensing Committee. Mr T. Wilford is a candidate for the Wellington Mayoralty. Mr C. J. Crawford, Miramar, will also contest the election. There is at present serving on a certain P. and 0. liner a young and zealous officer known as Mr Ronald Arthur Dalzell, who in real life bears the title of Lord Dalzell and Liberton, heir to Lord Carnwath, a Scottish carl. He is not tho only earl, however, who has served in the mercantile marine. The present

Ear 1 of Egmont and the late Earl of Aberdeen both served before the mast, while tho present Lord Lyveden was at one time a ship's steward. Mr C. H. Poole, M.P. for Auckland West, was married to-day to Miss Pacey, a member of a prominent family of Nolicense workers in the Queen City. Mr H. N. Holmes, secretary of the Y.Si.C. A., Wellington, acted as best man at tho wedding, and Mr Hart, another Wellingtonian, assisted. The ladies of Mr Poole's election committee have presented the bridegroom-elect with three handsome pieces of furniture, as a contribution towards his new home.

Claudo L. Jewell, of Wellington, has been appointed sub-editor of ° the Taranaki Daily News.—Mr Geo. P. Brown, late of the literary staff of the Evening Post, has taken up the position of editor and manager of the Horowhenua Chronicle. Before leaving the Post on Saturday Mr Gresley Lukin, editor, spoke in terms of high appreciation of tho capable, loyal, and devoted ser\ ices that Mr Brown has given to the Post, and on behalf of himself and the staff wished him every success in his new venture.

The officers of the Audit Department yesterday made presentations to two retiring officers, Mr J. K. Warburton, late Auditor and Controllor-Gencral, and Mr J. B. Heywood, Assistant Controller and Auditor-General. On behalf of the former gentleman, who was unable to be present owing to illness, Col. Collins, the now Auditor-General, received a valuable silver coffee pot aijd salver. To Mr Heywood, who leaves shortly for England, was given a photograph of the staff, a cigar case, sovereign case, and rug. The Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, presided over the gathering.

Mr McLeod, an old and respected resident of the Opunake district, died last week. Deceased (says the Opunake Times) turned 74 years of age last Sunday. He was the last survivor of the historical _Dr. Livingstone expedition. Prior to joining Dr. Livingstone's expedition ho served for the space of three years as an engineer on H.M.S. Lyra, a boat employed in the slave trade suppression. He was one of the chief mourners at the burial of Mrs Livingstone, away up in the Zambesi river in 1862. He was left in charge of the expedition for a period of ten months during the explorer's absence on a foot expedition, and could recount many interesting incidents in connection with the great explorer. The Livingstone expedition was recalled in 1883, and prior to deceased's secession from it he was presented with a Bible by Miss McKenzie, sister of Bishop McKenzie. Deceased landed in the Dominion in 1864, and has been here ever since. He leaves a grown-up family. The surviving members are: —W. MoLeod (Shannon), Norman McLeod Piako), James McLeod (Mastertou), Mrs Boyne (Woodville), Mrs S. Buckthought (Masterton). Mrs A. 11. Moore (Opunake), Miss E. McLeod (Wairoa, Hawke's Bay), and Miss J. McLeod (Opunake).
