It is stated that the output of dairy produce in North Canterbury has more than doubled during the past two years.

At an extraordinary general meeting of the Hawera Dairy CompanVj Ltd., it was resolved to increase) the share capital from £10,000 to £15,000. Tho annual meeting of the Manawatu A. and P. Association will bo held at 12 o'clock to-morrow, by which hour all ballot papers in connection with tho election of committeemen must be returned. Near Ohaupo, on tho Main Trunk Line, the rails for a distance of about a mile have sunk several inches. It was found necessary to dig out all the ballasting and make a, foundation with 600 bundles of ti-tree. Mr Newman, M.P"., is to make application on behalf of the Foxton Borough Council, to tho Government Advances Board for a loan of £20,000 in anticipation of tho poll for the water and drainage proposals. The Board meete at Wellington on the 16th inst. Master P. PI. Freefch, formerly a pup'li of the College Street School, but now of Wellington College, has won the Wellington schooboys , swimming championship. Master Frteth is a son of Mr P. O. Ficeth, managing editor of the N.Z. Times. Before Mr C. E. Waldegrave, J.P.. at the Magistrate's Court this morning , a man named J. Rooster was fined 10s. with the usual alternative, for drunkenness and disorderly conduct. Another man, Neilsen by name, was sentenced to 24 hours' imprisonment for being idle and disorderly. In yesterday's issue we stated that as a result of the money derived from the All Nations Fair tho Hospital Board had decided to apply for the necessary permission to erect a women's consumptive annexe at a cost not exceeding £1450. Subsequently the members of the Hospital Board visited the institution, and selected a site for the annexe at the end of the women's ward, but in the adjoining section, and separated from the main building by a macrocarpo hedge. This portion of the grounds has been lately laid out and commands a pleasant outlook. At the Feilding S.M. Court yesterday plaintiff was non-suited in the case of' C. 11. West v. C. J. Adams, Palmerston, a claim for £15,' value of a dog run over and killed by defendant's motor-ear. The case hinged on whether tho car was on its right side of the road, and after hearing the evidence the S.M. decided that the suggestion that tho car was on tho wrong side had not been established. The car was driven slowly, and was equipped with lights. Plaintiff's case was not strong enough to call on the defence. Defendant was allowed costs and fee, totalling £3 Is. A rather interesting assertion was made at the Wicker Workers' Wages Board, Sydney, with respect to colonialmade and foreign-made wicker work furniture. A well-known Sydney manufacturer said he never advertised, because tho retailers did not want the public to know the goods are made in Australia ; they want the public to think they are imported. They tell the public they are English goods, or American, or German, or Chinese. In tho discussion that followed this statement, the chairman of the Board (Mr T. S. Spencer) said he know a factory in Sydney where finished American boots, with American brands on them, could be obtained. The witness said that the shopkeepers could run tho public into a rat-trap. They could sell the public anything. London cables tnis week mention the high prices that are being realised for rubber and the boom in eharee. Yesterday a representative of the "Standard" received a letter from a friend in Singapore, who states that the boom has extended to the East and shares have risen rapidly. He says: —"The paper I am sending you (Singapore Free Press) will show you the big boom that is coming on in rubber shares in this part. Every share is above par and some are as much as ten times their nominal value. AngloMalays were floated at 2s and now stand at 225. Rubber at 8s 2d per lb gives a margin of profit of something like 6s per lb, which enables moet estates to pay 30 to 40 per cent, and in some cases 90 per cent, hence the rush to buy shares. Unless one can talk rubber all else is flat." The death last week of a schoolboy named Oscar Samuelson, 12, by drowning in the Murrumbidgee River, though 6ad in itself, was surrounded by circumstances which brought out the heroism of Mr J. Hickey, master of the South Wagga (N.S.W.) school, and another echolar named Trim. The party was swimming in the usual spot after school in charge of Messrs Byrnes and Hickey. masters, and after the signal had been given to return to tho bank five boys, including Samuelson, swam a little lower down the stream, and were swept oft* their feet by a whirlpool. Hickey, seeing their plight, rushed in, and under groat difficulties and risk to himself got three of the boys safely to the bank. Trim, 13, also swam in and pulled a boy named Taylor out, just as the latter was drowning. Before Samueleon could bo reached he sank, and it was twenty minutes before tho body was recovered by diving. Efforts at resuscitation were tried for three-quarters of an hour, but proved futile. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned, and the masters of the school were exonerated from any negligence.

Sir John Batty Tuke, who is now visiting the Dominion after an interval of nearly halE a. century, etated in. Auckland that during the two or three weeks ho has been in the Dominion, what has impressed him most is the' wholesale denudation of the native bush and the disappearance of what appealed to him as the natural characteristics and charm of the land. "You have undoubtedly civilised the land," he said to an interviewer, "but you have ruined the beauty of the native scenery. I looked in vain when I was in the Wairarapa and the Manawatu for some of the magnificent bush that once was the marvel of the country. The valley of the Hutt is quite unrecognisable, and in a great many cases the destruction soems to have been en-

tirely apart from utilitarian purposes, for they planted innumerable European and other trees foreign to the soil, that to my mind look quite incongruous and not nearly so beautifui as the New Zealand forest, trees. Little any of us could dream as we went, up and down the country in the early days," he remarked, "that it would, within our lifetime, become closely settled and dotted with busy and thriving townships. Wiry, I remember having more than once camped on tho spot where Palmerston North now stands, and a desolate spot it was then. When I was there- tho other day, I stood on Mount Stewart and looked along the vbl'o.v and marvelled. We could have bought land about there then for, I think it was, either 5s or 10s an acre. I might have bought some myself except that at that time I did not have the 10s." laughed Sir John reminiscently.

■Boring for artesian water in the Hoe pital grounds at Wanganui has been successful, a fine flow having been obtained.

At a meeting of the Fcilding Borough Council last night it was decided to raiso a special loan of £8000 for electric light installation. The report of the Special Committee sot up in this connection state that every local body .with an electric light installation reported favourably on the light, and each had made a profit on the outlay. 'At the same meeting a motion that a loan of £12.000 for the erection of a combined building, theatre, and town hall was lost, a majority of the Councillors considering the electric light proposals were sufficient to put before the Ratepayers.
