DANNEVIRKE RACES,

FIRST DAY.

The racing public of the Manawatu Waiararapa and southern Hawkes Bay was well represented at the ■ opening of the Dannevirko Racing Club's autumn meeting yesterday, trains from each por KTof the district being well pataonised. With the exception- of the Hack Hurdle* in which there wcro only two books and the machine, was brisk ine meetine was well managed, and a wra W H Hartgill, tho box was filled b> Mr T EG Lloyd, and he got througn mSs^ a iSuTibSS sa B ok " Wvtwo of the original five acceptors went *to the post in the Hack Hurdles, Windage and Moat, a serviceable lookin" gelding by Capt, Webb from Escalade, trained by J. Horcock, who also rode him. Moat raado all the running Windage being content to race a length behind all the way to the home turn, and there, when he made his cftort, Moat had too much left, and beat the Palmerstontrained horse to the post by a couple of lengths easily. . The scratching pen was, orought into requisition again in the Makirikin Handicap, "n which Redwing, Magneto, Leolanter, Billington. Royal Maid and Composed declined their engagements. Strathmoira was fastened upon by the public as the best of good things, but Toanga, Aimwell and Moree were each well supported. Curator was a quiet paddock tip, but was neglected on tho machine. He got away well and leading all the way, won very comfortably from Toanga, with Strathmoira close up third. A field of eight faced the starter in tho Darmevirko Cup, and Sandstream, no doubt on the strength of his meritorious display in the Wanganui Stakes Handicap on the previous Saturday, was selected to win. Clemora was also well backed. Miss Advance was first to got going and passing the stand she was clear of Bridge and Parable, with Sandetream and Lawn Rose next. Miss Advance led along the back stretch, whero Parable had displaced Bridge, whilst Clemora had also moved up. At the far turn Sandstream ran through his horses and at the home turn passed Miss Advance, and finishing strongly, won by a length from Clemora, with Parable close up. Bridge was fourth, and then followed Te Puia, Truganini, Miss Advance and Lawn Rose.

A good lot of two-year-olds went out in the Nursery Handicap, in which the only defection was Humarire. The bracketed pair. Kohinoor and Virtue. were sent out in pride of place, whilst Killaloo and Sea Eagle were only a. little less in demand. An excellent start was effected, a,nd Killaloo was the first to show out. At the home turn Kohinoor and Sea Eagle were up in front, and in an excellent race to the post the judge was unable to separate them. Deploy was a fair third. Killaloo was fourth, and then Esmeh, who was about fifth all the wav.

A field of ten went to the post in the Tahoraite Welter, Capt. Bell carrying the bulk of the money invested, whilst Passive and Polynices ranked as second and third picks. Punters were not far astray in their selection, Passive ecoring nicely from Liquid Air on the post with a well-timed rush that took him past Jenkins on Liquid Air before the latter rider was aware of the proximity of the Lovin-traincd mare, who gave A. J. Shearsby his first win for some time past. Lord Irwell was responsible for the pace sot, leading his field by a clear length along the back stretch, and only succumbing to the placed horses at the homo turn, finishing fourth, close up with Obscurity, who was up with the front horses all the way.

Sea Queen was the only withdrawal from the Flying Stakes, nine acceptors going to t'tie post. Liza, slipped her field, and leading Hermia along the back stretch by about four lengths, lasted long enough to win by a bare halflength from the Birkenhcad marc. Sunbonnet was a couple of lengths away third.

A field of nine faced the tapes in the Electric Handicap, Glenspring. a stable mate of Curator, a previous winner during the day, was sent out favourite, and the good thing duly materialised, Glenspring passing the post a length and a half to the good from the topweight Ambala, with Amaru, who got away badly, a head away third. Hine Korangi, who ran up to the position of second favourite at the eleventh hour, set the pace from the send-off, leading to the home turn, where she died away. Ascalon was fourth. Conqucstina showed up at the stand, but was well beaten at the home turn. There was a field of five in the Tamaki Welter, and Swimming Belt was entrusted with the bulk of the bullion, with Golden Water only a little less in demand. The latter never gave her supporters the least anxiety, jumping out of the tapes a length in front of her field, and winning comfortably by the same margin from Lethean, with Marton a length away third. Swimming Belt was anchored by his impost of 10.4, and was a very poor fourth, whilst old Ballyneety was lost.
