AN HISTORIC MONUMENT.
(Per Press Association.) AKAROA, March 8. The Hon. Mackenzie visited Akaroa to-day and met several deputations which brought before him matters chiefly of local interest. One request made' was that the Government should endeavour to acquire the site of the Britomart monument, erected on the spot where the British flag was first hoisted. At present it stands partly on private land, the owner of which prior to his decease expressed his intention of giving the necessary area to give the Pud™ access to the monument, but he did not carry out his intention, and his trustees consider it is not in thenpower to give the land. . The Minister stated he recognised that the monument was a national one and undertook to communicate with the trustees on the subject of the acquisition of the necessary area. The Minister left for Wellington tonight.
