Mrs H. Colo, sen., one of the oldest settlers in the Wairarapa, died at Masterton on Friday night. A London cable says that the Trinity College of Music has appointed Mr Charles Schitsky examiner for New Zealand.

The Methodist Conference has elected the Rev. G. W. J. Spence, of Palmcrston North, chairman of the Wanganui District Synod. Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., is at present in Christchurch, and is steadily improv-

ing in health. He will probably return to Masterton about the end of this week.

The many friends of Major Campbell will regret' to hear that he has been compelled to enter a private hospital in Palmerston for medical treatment

Mr W. J. Culver, Inspector of Awards in this district, is at present enjoying his annual holiday. During his absence Mr A. Donald, of Wellington, is in charge of the office.

Mr Markland, manager of the Tiratu Sawmiliing Company, who lately submitted to an operation for appendicitis, is making satisfactory progress towards complete recovery. ■'

Mr W. F. Massey, M.P., Leader of the Opposition, will pay a short visit to Dnnedin prior to hie visit to the West Coast, where ho will deliver a political address at Easter.

Mr S. W. Fitzhorbert, the well-known Feilding Solicitor, left Feilding on Saturday, en vouto to England, where he intends to take up his residence. Mrs Fit/.hcrbert accompanied her husband.

The Pahiatua Herald understands that Mr 11. T. Ellingham. of Horoeka, will be a candidate for the Pahiatua seat at the next, general election. Mr Ellingham is the Crown Tenant's representative on the Wellington Band Board.

Mr C. J. Crawford, at present Mayor of the Suburban Borough of Miramar, hns agreed to stand for the Wellington City Mayoralty. Messrs T. M. Wilford, M.P., and J. "P. Luke, M.P., are mentioned as probable candidates.

Lord Kitchener, accompanied by Mr and Mrs Parker, arrived at Rotorua by motor at 3.30 p.m. on Friday. The party strolled about the Sanatorium grounds for the rest of the- afternoon. After leaving Rotorua, tho party proceeds, via Taupo. to Napier.

Intimation has been received from tho Wanganui Education Board by the Terrace End School Committee that it is proposed to appoint Miss Coombe, of the D. H.S., Feilding, to tho position lately filled by Mies O'Donnell at the echool. Credentials have been sent for perusal by the committee.

The death is announced of Mrs Alex. McGregor, Whareroa, Huntorville, at the age of 63. The deceased lady was an eye-witness of the recent accident which resulted in the death of her son, Mr Peter McGregor, and she has never

really recovered from the shock. Sho was well known and highly esteemed throughout the district. She is survived by her husband, and Mr James and Miss McGregor. Mr Jas. McGregor was in a private hospital in Palmerston, and left that institution to attend his mother's funeral. The deepest sympathy has been expressed for the' surviving members of the stricken family in their successive bereavements.

Mr YV. A. Woodgor, New Zealand's champion sprinter, has been ordered by his doctor to take leave of the track for six months at least. For him the present season has been a brief but a brilliant one. Within the space of four weeks he has run the 220 yards in 21 4.5 sec (a New Zealand record) in 22 1-5 sec. and in 22 2-ssec, the latter raco winning him tho provincial championship, has run the 100 yards in even time (winning the provincial championship), in 10 l-ssec, not pushed, and been beaten by inches over the same distance in 9 4-5 sec, and by under two yards in 9 3-s*ec. Mr Woodgor is slowly recovering from the .severe illness which succeeded on his visit to the North.

The Right Rev. Isaac Jolly, 'M.A., Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, and formerly in charge of the church at Palmerston North, was inducted into the pastorate of St. Stephen's Church. Pomonby, on Friday evening. Ihorc was a large congregation and a large attendance of the Auckland Presbytery. The Rev. J. M. Simpson, Knox'C'liiirchj Parnell, conducted worship and preached, after which the induction prayer was offered by the Rev. W. TroUer. 8.A.. who had acted as interim moderator. Mr Trotter and othefo- then gave the right hand of fellowship to Mr Jolly. Mr" Trotter suitably addressed the newly-inducted minister, and the Rev. R. L. Walker addressed the congregation on their duty to the minister.
