Manawatu Evening Standard. Circulation, 3,500 Copies Daily. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1910. MUNICIPAL BATHS.

It is satisfactory to know that some attention is being paid locally to the requirements of the town in the way of swimming baths. The fine summer and the reports from other boroughs regarding the success of baths emphasise Pahnerston's deficiency, and there is no doubt that a scheme could be propounded which would have a much greater prospect of returning the cost of construction than certain propositions which some people seem anxious to involve the town in. Reference was made to the matter at the annual meeting of the High School Board of Governors by Mr Hodder. During the discussion Cr Stubbs said that the Borough Council was considering in committee the question of the provision of public baths, and that data was being collected with the idea of bringing the whole matter before the ratepayers. Cr Stubbs indicated that there was a possibility of a tepid water bath being available under the Council's proposals, and this provision

is now regarded as indispensable in all up-to-date baths. The suggestion has previously been made that the heat necessary could be generated by including a destructor in the scheme. There cannot be any doubt as to the desirability of a destructor for the disposal of nibbieh, as the present

method of dealing with it is decidedly

primitive. It is quite possible, of course, that the Council has other designs with regard to the heating of the proposed baths, but the suggestion that the two projects should be combined is worthy of consideration. In the meantime it would be desirable for those school committees and boards who are anxious to secure facilities of their own to lvait until the Council has come to some definite conclusion. It would bo much preferable for all interested in the provision of baths to co-operate and secure the erection of an establishment that will be worthy of the town. The best that individual bodies could do would not be a satisfactory provision to meet the case, but if all efforts

arc concentrated it will not be long before Palmorston will be as well served in this connection as other places in the Dominion, where the experience is that municipal baths aro

almost invariably profitable, to say nothing of the fact that they supply the means of a healthful and popular recreation.
