BREACHES OF THE LICENSING ACT.

FIELD DAY AT FOXTON.

There -was a long list of cases of alleged breaches of the Licensing Abt at Foxton brought before Mr AD. Thomson, S.M.. yesterday. A. Hadfield, licensee of/the Maaawatu Hotel, was charged hy the police with (1) selling liquor; (2) keeping premises open ior the sale of liquor; and (3) exposing liquor for sale on Sunday, January 2nd. The barman at the hotel, R. Howard, was also charged with selling., liquor on the same occasion to persons -who were not legally entitled thereto. These charges, on . the of Mr Cooper, for the defence, were adjourned till February 2nd at 9 o'clock. Geo. Gupwell and S. Wilson, charged with being found on licensed premises without lawful excuse, did not appear, and were each fined 10s and costs 7s.

Reese Baker, a resident of Foxton, pleaded guilty to a charge of being unlawfully on the. premises of the Family Hotel on Sunday, January 2nd, and was fined os and costs 7s.

H. S. Munro, licensee of the Family Hotel, was charged with selling liquOr on Sunday, December 26th, in contravention of the Act. This case was also adjourned to February 2nd. In connection with this caee Patrick Lennihan was prosecuted fo"r being unlawfully on licensed premises. Accused was seen leaving the hotel by the police, who accosted him and took a bottle of beer that he was carrying under his coat from him. A fine of 10s and costs 7s was imposed. ■ Henry O'Donnell, a resident of Foxton, similarly charged, was fined 10s and costs, as was also Peter Petersen, a prohibited person. A like charge against Jas. Hooper was dismissed, it being shown in evidence that accused had taken a bed at the hotel, with the object of attending the Palmerston Races the next day. F. Walls, H. Walls, and J. Harris were each fined 10s and costs 7s for being unlawfully on the premises of the Family Hotel. Jno. Kinley, charged with being unlawfully on the premises of the Manawatu Hotel, on Sunday, 26th December, was fined 10s and costs 7s.

Sub. Inspector O'Donovan appeared or the police in each instance.
