ROYAL PALACES AFIRE.
RUSSIAN TREASURE HOUSE BURNT. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Per Press association.) Received January 11, 8.45 a.m. ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 10. The palace of the Grand Duke Nicholas Micholaievitch is afire at St. Petersburg. The priceless collections of diamond studded armour and porcelain has been destroyed. AN INCIDENT AT ATHENS. ARMED ESCORT CAUSES TROUBLE. Received Januarv 11, 9.15 a.m. ATHENS, Jan. 10. When the 400 British sailors landed to extinguish the fire in the Royal Palace at Athens they were accompanied by 100 armed marines and a flag. They pushed through the Greek troops and took a front position, mounting guard over the treasures. An armed escort also accompanied the Russians. The Greek officers protected against this. The Athens papers are angry at the incident. The Premier explains that an escort is usual in such eases, but the subject is causing irritation. The damage to the palace totalled £100,000 sterling.
