GREAT LOSSES IN AUSTRALIA

(Per Press Association.: (Received Dec. 22, 9.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 22. Great destruction has been done by bush fires in the Riverina district. The losses include much bagged wheat, standing crops and stock. MELBOURNE, Dec. 22. A severe heat wave prevails and there are bush fires in all; directions. At Donald many acres of standing crops and 20,000 bags of wheat have been burned. The total damage is £50,000. At Cobram 1600 bags of wheat and 60 acres of barley were burnt. At Charlton an old man named Steward was entering a burning house to secure the valuables when he was burned to death. Reports from other districts show that immense areas of grass and much of the crops have been destroyed. A number of settlers have lost their homes.
