RETRENCHMENT IN THE CIVIL SERVICE.
SAYING IN SALARIES
The Estimates show how some of the savings in salaries of high officials have been effected. The new Government Meteorologist receives £300, as compared with £400 paid to his predecessor. The remuneration of the office of Surveyor-General has fallen from £700 to £662. The new Secretary for Agriculture receives £500, whereas the former holder of the office had £675, and the new Chief Clerk has £365 as compared with £390. Tlie general managership of the State Fire Insurance carries with it now £725 a. year instead of £800; the In-spector-General of Hospitals and Charitable Aid (Dr Valintine) retains the same salary as last year, £850. His salary, lor the position of Chief Health Officer, lately given to him, is given as nil. Last year Dr Mason, as Chief Health Officer, received £900. The office of District Land Registrar, Registrar of Deeds, etc. (Auckland), carries £565 in lieu of £590. The Registrar-General of Land gets £600 instead of £640; the District Land Registrar (Hawke's Bay) £390 instead of £540. and the gaolership at Wellington is now worth £300 in lieu of £320. On the other hand, there are some increases, one being the salary of the Resident Commissioner of the Cook Islands, which is now £600 in lieu of £500 paid to the late Commissioner. The higher sum, however, is that received by the now Commissioner prior to taking up his pre&en-t position. Several decreases are also due to a change in the officers, those leaving or transferred having been succeeded by junior members of the Service. In the Geological Survey branch of the Mines Department the total vote
asked for is £2542, as compared with last year's expenditure of £3514. The salary of the Director (£800) remains as hitherto, but that of the Chief Geologist appears as £350 instead of £750. The vote for assistant geologists is reduced from £695 to £300, and there are other savings in regard to the junior officials. The total amount asked for salaries for the Mines Department is £5132, as against £6249 expended last year. The total mining vote is £24,507, or nearly £7000 le&s than was spent last year, when ■£31,45S was expended.
