A cable from London announces tho death-of Mr Lionel Brough, the wellknown actor. • A • Duned'n telegram says that M/ Gcorgo Fenwick has resigned the editorship of the Otago Daily Times. He will be succeeded by Mr Hutchison. A private cable received in Wellington states that the health of the Hon. W. Hall-Jones, High Commissioner in London, has considerably improved. The friends of Mr Victor Penman will regret to hear of the death of his wife, which occurred this morning. The deceased lady was aged 39. Mrs Bellve, who was in occupation of the Empire Hotel, Feilding, for many years, died at Dunedin a few The interment will take place at Feilding on Thursday. Sergeant-Major Mason, who has been in charge of the Blenheim police for some years, has been placed on. the superannuation list as from October 31. Sergt. Dart, from the Wellington headquarters, has succeeded Sorgt.-Major 'Mason.
The Rev. John M'Kenzie, the newlyappointed pastor of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Wanganui, will arrive from Colae, Victoria, in about six weeks' time, and it is expected that he will be there in time to preach his first sermon as pastor on Sunday, December 12.
The death is announced at Greymouth of Mr E. P. Heaphy, a well-known citizen of that town. The late Mr Heaphy. who was a shipping, land and mining agent, was one of Greymouth's most widely-known and best respected townsmen. Mr C. T. Gayne, who succeeds Mr Simons as stationmaster at Aramoho. has been chief clerk at the Rangiora Railway Station for about two years. Mr Simons has been seven years _ stationmaster at Aramoho. He left for Petonc yesterday, to which station ho has been promoted to fill the position vacated by Mr Bass, S.M.. who retires on superannuation. Viscount Sclby, whoso death was cabled yesterday, was second son of the late Dγ J. M. Gully. Ho was the first viscount, the title being conferred upon him in 1905. He was formerly the Right Hon. William Court Gully, for ten years Speaker of the House of Commons. Born in London in 1835. Viscount Selby had a distinguished educational career. Mr Chas. Bennett, of Auckland, who went to Dunedin recently for eye treatment, passed through Palmerston j-ester-day en route to his home. Mr Bennett has benefited considerably since placing himself in the hands of Dr Ferguson, of j Dunedin, and there is every reason to believe that a complete restoration of ] his eyesight will be effected. The- news < will be received with pleasure by Mr Bennett's many friends in this district.
Mr Jas. McLcavcy. chairman of the Horowhenua County Council, shortly vacates hie seat owing to his term of office 'having expired. At Saturday's meeting he pointed out that that was practically his last mooting in the position of chairman, and he therefore took the opportunity of thanking the Councillors for the Very great courtesy shown to him during his term. He wished to compliment all on the harmony of the meetings, and the interest 6hown in same. Mr McLeavey also expressed hie thanks to the staff* for their assistance, and trusted that his own endeavours had proved satisfactory. The remarks were received with decided approval.
