SPORTING.

MANAWATU AUTUMN MEETING. STAKES WON BY PROVOCATION. Delightfully line weather, although a bit on the sharp side, prevailed yesterday when the Manawatu Racing Club commenced its autumn meeting. The attendance, Consequently, was most satisfactory, and though considerably short of the big crowd one is accustomed to. see at Christmas time, was an improvement on the corresponding day last year. Speculation was also fairly brisk, a total of £7568 passing through the machine as compared with £9191 last'year, when there were eight races on the card as against seven yesterday. Against the ly small" dechne has to be set the £383 received in fees from the bookmakers, and therefore the club, from a. financial point of view, did remarkably well yesterday. Racing was good in all the events, and the meeting was well managed by the secretary, Mr J. M. Johnston and his assistants, Messrs Watson and Manson. ! THE HACK HURDLES. , A field of nine went out in the Liuton Hack Hurdles, with which proceedings commenced, Corazon carrying most of the money, whilst Scenery, and Rangihaeta were fairly evenly* backed, Scenery having a slight call. Lothair, who was making his first appearance over hurdles, was first away, and, jumping in excellent style, showed the way for a mile, and then gave place to Somali, who had been lying second to him, whilst Corazon and Rangihaeta closed up. The rest of the field, including Scenery, who fell at the second hurdle, were beaten off. At the stewards' stand Corazon had taken Somali's measure, and passing her won by a length with Rangihaeta an indifferent third. Golden Glow was fourth, then Lothair and Feu do Joie. BIG FIELD OF HACKS. Seventeen horses went out in the Karere Hack Welter, Guiding Step being entrusted with the bulk of the capital. Hermia and Twinkle were first out of the tapes, and led their field by a. clear length to the far turn, where Twinkle found the pace too hot, and dropped back. Hermia continued in the lead, and, withstanding a strong challenge by Ukraine, who showed the best form of her career so far, won by a clear length, with Thetis a good third. Half-way down the back stretch Arivore fell after colliding with the rails, and roll'ed over C. Scott, his rider, who, after being attended to op. the course, was sent to the hospital by Dr O'Bvien. THE FIFTH MANAWATU

' STAKES. The scratching pen was used very freely'in the Manawatu Stakes, only six horses facing the starter, each of the Hon. J. D. Ormond's representatives, Contendent, Xylophone, and Fiddler being "withdrawn.* Provocation was sent otit favourite, carrying twice as much money as Maori King, who was better fancied than Bobrikoff. The rest were quite neglected. The horses were got away on excellent terms, and raced in a line for a furlong, where Provocation commenced to forge ahead, and at the four-furlong post he was out a clear length from Thistledown and Maori King. Bobrikoff was alongside the latter, and Kilwinning last. Afc the home turn Bobrikoff and Maori King moved up after the leader, but they could not trouble him, the Wairarapa colt winning nicely by a length. Bobrikoff beat Maori King a length for second place. The six furlongs was covered in lmin. 14 3-nsec, a remarkably good performance in y,iew of the rather holding nature bf the going. Machine Gun holds the time, record for the race, lmin. 14 Aborigine won last year in lmin. 14. 2-ssec.

I THE TELEGRAPH. Diampnd Star was the only withdrawal from the Telegraph Stakes, nine horses facing the starter. The race was practically a match between Longner and Kareroa, the pair being out by ■ themselves till the half distance was reached, when Flitaway drew up with them. Longner won by a clear length, Flitaway a head behind Kareroa, while Lady Menschikoff was close--up fourth. The, latter put in a great run from the home turn. Longner and Kareroa were very smart out of the tapes, and getting into their strides quickly placed daylight between ...them and their field, an advantage that was not lessened till Flitaway came at them in the home stretch. THE OUTSIDER WINS THE LONGBURN. The withdrawal of Master Soult, Sir Tristram and Effort left a field of eleven in the Longburn Handicap. Moriarty was the public selection, and then Paisano found most favour. The favourite got well away and led by a clear length to the four furlong, post, where Daisy Paul tackled him and he fell back beaten. Daisy Paul, followed by Paisano, led round the home turn, and it looked as though the finish would be confined to the pair, but at the half distance Roosevelt shot out of the ruck and challenged the leaders. Daisy Paul lasted long enough to win by a head, but Paisano was beaten by a neck for second place..

j A FAVOURITE BEATEN. Six withdrawals from the Woodhey Handicap left a field of nine to face _the tapes. The public fastened on to Wimmera as the best goods offering, Illustrious being next on order, but all of them were well backed, with the exception of Castiglione. Dervish was first away, just ahead of Castiglione and Illustrious, Shannon Lass last. Dervish was still in front when the straight was reached, Illustrious, Mendip and Explosive being his nearest attendants, witlrWimmera and Waitoto coming fast on the outside. At the distance Dervish was passed by Illustrious and Mendip, the former winning by a length and a half from Mendip, Dervish a couple of lengths away third. Wimmera was fourth and Waipunui fifth. , Wimmera had a bad passage throughout.

THE LAST RACE. *'ive horses were saddled up in the last event of the day, the Taikorea Welter, Eclogue carrying the confidence of the public. The field was despatched on even terms and Scaton Dale was the first-.to break the line. He led to the far turn, where Eclogue drew up on terms. The pair fought out a finish, to the big stand, where Probability, who had raced in the rear, passed 'them full of running, and won comfortably by a length from Eclogue, Seaton v Dale a neck away third.
