OBITUARY.

ARTHUR G. CARTY

The news of the death of Mr Arthur G. Carty, the well-known Feilding solicitor, will be received with profound regret by tho residents of Feilding and Palmerston, where he was so widely known and respected. The untimely event, which has cut short in its prime a career of great promise, occurred in Palmerston North this morning. The deceased gentleman had, under medical submitted yesterday to a very serious operation, which however, dm not ava.il, and he gradually sank and passed away. Mr Garty had worked up a very large business connection in Feilding, and it was in so doing that he overstepped himself and placed on a somewhat frail body a burden too great to bear. The result was that his nerves gradually gave way under the strain, and medical advisers ordered an operation for congestion of the nerves, with the sad result already stated.

The late Mr Carty was thirty-three years of age, and was the second son of Mrs J. P. Leary, of Palmerston North. For many years as a young man ho was well known in Palmerston, having been a teacher in the old Central School, Main Street, and afterwards connected with the late Mr E. B. Pearce in his land agency business. About fourteen years ago he went to Feilding, and entered the office of Mr Saridilands, solicitor, with whom he stayed till he commenced practice on his own account four or five years ago. Mr Carty had gained a wide circle of acquaintances in the Feilding district, and he soon established himself as one of the leading solicitors, building up by his strenuous labours an extensive practice. He was to have taken a well-earned holiday in the Old "World liad the operation proved successful, but iu was found that his condition _ was much worse than had been anticipated, and so a vigorous and useful life was terminated with terrible suddenness. The late Mr Carty was married in 1897, and leaves his widow and one child to mourn their loss. His brother*; are Mr Richard Carty. of Holben and Kirk's, and. Mr Herbert Carty, of Taraiialci, . while his sisters are' Mrs W. H. •Judkins (wife of the editor of the Review of Reviews) and Miss Carty, of Palmerston North. The funeral will leave .the residence of Mr J. P. Leary on Friday morning at 9 o'clock for the .Feilding Cemetery, and will pass the Feilding railway station at 11 o'clock.
