FAREWELL SOCIAL.

AT STONEY CREEK.

The Stoney Creek hall was packed to its utmost holding capacity last night when the settlers of tho district gathered to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs McPhail, who arc leaving the district for Hawke's Bay. Mr Blake presided. The early part of the evening was devoted to a concert of musical and vocal items, in which a number of Palmerston people took part. An item that was much appreciated was a sword dance and Highland Fling by Master R Lloyd. During the evening the chairman, on behalf of the settlers of Stoney Creek and Kelvin Grove, took the opportunity of presenting Mr McPhail with an. illumiijated address, and Mrs McPhail with three pieces of silver ware. Miss H. Hansen also presented Miss McPhail on behalf of the school children with a gold brooch. Mr Blake alluded to the esteem in which Mr and Mrs McPhail was held by all who knew them. They had always had the welfare of the district at heart, and done all in their power to further its interests. In conclusion, he expressed the keen regret that all would feel at their departure. Other speakers were Messrs Devlin, Wilsher, and F. D. Opie, who all expressed their deep regret at Mr and Mrs McPhail's departure. Mr McPhail feelingly responded, thanking those present for their handsome gifts and the expressions of goodwill that had been made. Dancing was then proceeded with, Mr Hanley supplying tho music, while extras were played by Mesdames Young and Vaughan. Much appreciated refreshments were provided by the ladies, and the evening terminated with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." The handsome illuminated address is the work of Mr G-. H. Elliott, art master of the Palmerston Technical School.
