COMMON ASSAULT.
THE MAXIMUM PENALTY,
James Anneson, a young man, and a recent arrival in Palmerston, was charged at the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Messrs A. D. Thomson, S.M., and F. Mowlem, J.P., with common assault on Thursday last on a girl named Lucy Edgecombe, twelve years of age. Sergeant Stagpoole, in opening the case, said the chargo was one of common assault, but _the evidence would show that a more serious charge had been narrowly averted. He then outlined the case, after which evidence was given by the little girl, her brother, a witness named Larder, and Detective Quirkc for the prosecution. The only statement accused made in defence.was that the children had asked him for a penny and he had given them one. He had not interfered with them.
The Bench considered a serious offence had been narrowly averted. The maximum penalty for common assault was two months, with hard labour, and that sentence would bo inflicted.
