BLACK AGAINST WHITE
Mr W. W. Naughton, the American representative of the Sydney Referee.. writes:—
"The coloured population of Chicago is exceedingly proud of the eminence attained by Jack Johnson. This is seen in the raising of a fund of one hundred thousand dollars with which to back Jack against Jeffries or whoever wants to try for the championship. Bert Williams, a coloured comedian, who had to do with getting the money together, says there is plenty more where it came from! Of course, if Jeff and the negro should be matched, the Chicago coin will get quick action. There will be such a fund for Jeffries' backing, in fact, that I believe it will swamp Darktown and make the ' big fellow ' what the race reporters call a prohibitive favorite.
"When the news of Johnson's victory over Burns reached Chicago the colored people arranged banquets, and rejoicing was the order of the day. . . Among other things, Edward Morris, a negro lawyer, said: ' Johnson's victory demonstrates the physical superiority of the black over the Caucasian. If the negro can raise his mental standard to his physical eminence some day lie will be a leader among men, and Ethiopia shall come to her own.' "
