POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Pohangina County Council was held on Saturday. TKere were present: —Cre. R. W. Brown (chairman), D. Howie, G. F. Smith, H. Burne, A. A. Wagstaff, B. C. Eglinton and C. Bailey.

CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was received : — From-F. Gillett, C.E., forwarding plan of part sections 20 and 22, land taken by tho Pohangina County Council as a road reserve.—Received. From H. F.ields, applying for a cheque of £4 Is in place of one lost.—Held over. . .

From W. F. Viles, asking permission to put his fence on the edge of the road fronting section 5, block V., Mangaone, for a distance of about four chains. —Permission granted subject to the approval of the engineer. From the Kiwitea County Council, stating that the approach to Coulter's lino was receiving attention and also forwarding claim of £19 18s for Council's share in the Terrace road. —Amount to be paid. . , From W. Hunt, offering to fence the piece- of ground the Council bought from him for the sum of £10.—Offer accepted. From the Apiti Technical School Lommitee, applying for a grant towards their funds.—Ts T p action taken. From the Treasury, promising to attend to the Council's application for _an advance of £200 on the £600 loan for tho constructionoo r a bridge over the Oroua river at the Marton Block crossing.—Received. , , c From the Valuation Department, torwarding subsidy on rates amounting to £475 6s 3d.—Received. From the Receiver of Land Revenue, forwarding hyopthecated thirds amounting to £105 10s 4d to the credit of the Council.—Received. . From the District Road Engineer, asking for a detailed statement in connection with the Council's claim for a subsidy of £549 4s 8d on the Pohangina bridge.—Statement to be forwarded. From the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., asking the Council to put down some mcta! in iront of their yards at Apiti.—Engineer and Councillor for the riding to report.

TREASURER'S REPORT. Tho treasurer reported that the balances at the bank on the Ist inst. were: —General fund, cr., £723 16s 10d; loans account, cr., £450 Is 3d. The balances at the various ridings were as follows: — Awahou, cr., £71 15s 3d; Coal Creek, cr., £9 2s 6d; Mangapikopiko, cr., hl6( 7s lid; Pohangina, cr., £79 14s 6d; Mangaonc, dr., £156 11s lid; Tamaki, dr £234 7s 3d; Umutoi, dr., £714 9s lid. L , The rates for the current year amounting to £6382 15s 8d had all been collect-, ed. Accounts amounting to £541 15s 9d wore passed for payment.—Adopted. ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Tlie engineer reported on the various ridings as follows :—Awahou ; Tho erection of a fence on the Top road was finished. Repairs to th o top end of thebridle track leading to his house had been completed by Mr Bell. Another £10 was required to complete the lower end. He recommended that Mr Hunt s offer for fencing be accepted. Coal Creek: Nothing to report. Wangaonc: The Main and Ferry roads required repairing. Ho recommended that tho fencing of Finnis' track bo proceeded with. Mangapikopiko; Bhxt and Co. had made a satisfactory start with their metalling contract on the Norscwood road. Tenders had been called for tho quarrying and breaking of. 1000 yards of metal at Apiti. Pohangina: The Pohangina Valley road required metalling. Tamaki: Mr T Grammcr had completed his metalling contract on the Main road. Two men wore being employed tor ono week to assist tho rangor to break stones. Umutoi: The Council e teams were at work repairing the Makiokio road, and a man was employed breaking stones on tho Mount Richards road. Tho table drains on tho Piri Pin hill wore being attended to, arid the groyne would be attended to shortly. He recommended that a 1000 gallon tank bo, purchased for tho Council yard and a 600 gallon tank for tho Council ottice. The total coejt would bo £11 2s 6tl.—Adopted.

FINNIS' TRACK. The engineer reported with regard to Finnis' track. Ho stated the contract was for the formation of 91 chains, his estimate for the work being £300 6s,_ or £3 6s per chain. Tenders wore called twice, and the lowest tender received was £400, while the highest was £1128 18s. Consequently he had the- work carried, out by day labour, and he was able to report that the cost of tho wholo work only amounted to £269 16s, being £30 10s below his estimate. Tho full length of road now formed was 101 chains, with culverts and small bridges, at a total cost of £361 15s 9d. Tho Mangaono riding had been debited witn the whole cost, but ho recommonded that the Pohangina riding be charged with a part of tho cost, amounting to £63 13s Bd, leaving £299 2s Id for tho Mangaono riding.—Tho report was adopted. GENERAL. Councillor Howio gave notico of motion that tho Council consider tho question of building a, now Council room at an early dnte. It was resolved: That T. Bird's tender of £2 10s per year for a five years' lenso of part of reserve No. 7?, Block X, bo granted.—(Councillors Howie—Brown). That tho tender of T. L. Harland and Co. for quarrying and breaking 1000 yards of metal bo accepted.—(Councillors Burne—Wngstftff). That f,ho next meeting of the Council bo held on Wednesday, April 7, instead of tho 10th, owing to the Easter holidays.
