Sound commonsense pervades a letter addressed by Mr T. E. Taylor, M.P., to the Hon. G. Fowlds on the subject oJ the domestic service problem. Mr Taylor thinks it is largely useless to hope to secure sufficient domestic workers in England to supply the Dominion's needs. He doubts whether a score of emigration agents would induce five hundred thoroughly competent domestics to quit Great Britain for the purpose of taking employment abroad. He sees the solution of the problem here in New Zealand. "We must elevate employment in the home to a level that will give an equal standing to those engaged in it to that which is enjoyed by women who follow the profession of teaching or nursing." In Mr Taylor's view the State should immediately undertake the duty of establishing in connection with the schools and colleges of this country opportunities of. thorough training in every branch of domestic work. Women who qualify under these conditions should be duly certificated, and could look with much pride upon their qualifications to assist in the maintenance of home life, ae the woman who now in the capacity of a certificated nurse looks with pride upon her ability to relieve human suffering. By thus gliving domestic service an elevated and honoured sjtatus, employment in the household would not be regarded as degrading, but would rather be welcomed as fitting the individual for the important duties of house-keeping in later years. Mr Taylor's proposition is worthy of consideration.
