THE WOOL,SALES. . •DUNEDIN, December 17. The first of.the series of.Duncdin wool sales- was held to-day. The total offerings were 8821 bales,. as agairtst 4688 at the opening of the sale last year; the increase, no doubt, being accounted f<-r by fine weather during the last few weeks, and also by the fact, that prices ruling at the north sales were much in advance of what was expected earlier in the season. There was a largo attendance of buyers, representing British, Continental and American centres, as well as local buyers. The quality of the clip was. for the most part, equal to that of last year, but some "of the Central Gtogo wool gave evidence of the severe winter. The mast,'noticeable feature was the comparatively Hgh prices paid by Bradford buyers for sound crossbred hogget wool of good length. Continental buyers were strong competitors .for medium halfbrcd. in many cases outbidding i local milk,, who usually take (he bulk of these Jots. 'Iho prices'ruled as follow?,:—Super halfbred. to Is; medium to good, 8d to 10d; inferior, 6?d to super crossbreds, 10d to 12^d; good crossbveds. 7|d to 9£d; medium I crossbreds. to 7^d; super merinos, 12d; medium to good.
