NEW TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

A PEEP AT THE PLANS

•Last night, in presenting the prizes at the big gathering in the Municipal Hall, Mr Rutherfurd said he had never got a prize in his one. That one was the £5000 grant for the Palmerston Technical School. This morning a "Standard" representative was shown the plans of the new school, and Palmerston most decidedly must congratulate itself on; its prize, for the building to be erected is eminently .fitted in every - way for - the requirements of a technical school in a growing town like Palmerston North.

The new school will have its main frontage of 86ft to Duke etreet, and a frontage of 72ft to King etreet, and the corner will be adorned-by a fine-looking two-storey building of brick, with concrete facings. Entrance is obtained from Duke street to the fine roomy hall, from which,.to the right, a door leads to the cookery room, a spacious compartment 37ft x 28ft, fitted with the most up-to-date appliances for imparting to the youngf idea the most scientific methods of assisting digestion. On the left of the hall are two fine science rooms, 31ft x 28ft and 12j.ft x 28ft. These rooms also will havo in them all necessary aids to experimentalists, and will supply a longfelt want. The director's room and library is part of the main hall, and occupies a space of 23ft x 13ft, near the main entrance. Besides these rooms on tho ground floor, there is a general class room, 28ft x 22ft. At tho end of the hall a stairway leads to the upper etorey, where there are three big class rooms, 20ft x 17£ ft, 20ft x 18ft and 25ft x 18ft. Here also the art department will be found, and the authorities have provided four rooms which are to be exclusively used for that purpose. The art master has an office, 14aft x Bft and there is a 'metal workers' room, 28ft x 13gft. Then there are two fine rooms for the general work, 28ft x 22ft and 28ft x 30ft, and they are only divided by a moveable partition, so that on any_ special occasion such as an art exhibition or a display of students' work the authorities will have at their disposa_l a hall of sufficient dimensions for their need. These rooms aro all lit with proper art room skylights, and the students, who have so .long worked under many disabilities, will now have every opportunity and encouragement to do the best that is in them. At the rear of the main building a two-etorey brick workshop is to bo erected for the carpenters and plumbers, while a bicycle shed is added for the convenience of students. The architect, Mr Clere, of Wellington, has also mode provision for future additions to the building, and a doorway is to be made in the wall -of the ■building at the rear, which will be bricked in for the present, but will be available at a future date when new class-rooms are added.
