ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
The Chronicle supplies the- following details of the fatal accident at Parapara, up the Wangamti river: —The deceased (John Scally) and Tom Ryan were engaged on contract work on the road at Parapara .and occupied the same tent. About midnight a big tree, which to all appearances, had been as secure as a rock, fell on the tent and crushed Scally. Ryan had a miraculous escape, being nearly suffocated. A number of bushmen in an adjoining camp heard a tree fall, and on, looking out saw that one had crashed across Scally's tent. They got candles and went over, just in time to see Ryan crawling from beneath the ruins. Scally was found face downwards on the ground, one arm being smashed to a pulp under him. Two of the men lifted him up and carried him into the galley adjoining. He was breathing heavily and lived for half an hour. The body was attended to by Messrs Church Bros.; of Upokongaro, who also lent assistance in taking the remains over three miles of rough country to the main road. The sorrowful party reached town about 9.30 a.m.
