THE FAILURE OF SO-iLieENSE.IN AMERICA, • IN a previous article the failure of No-License in Ashburton : has - been , shown, and it is now intended; in a brief, manner to. show the working, of Prohibition in America. The following - States have abandoned: Prohibition after giving, it .- a . thorough trial:—Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, , Indiana, Nebraska, Michigan, Illinois, lowa, South Dakota. The five States that still retain it have a population of _ about three - millions, while those that have abandoned it have a populationof fifteen millions.. There are on an estimate 1400 liquor sellers in Prohibition Maine. The Rev. W. F. Berry says: " The friends of Prohibition all over the - country, and, indeed, throughout the world, are makirijg ; statements concerning the execution of the Maine law that are\ simply untrue." The British Vice-Consul of Portland, the capital of Maine, says? there; are 350 . sly-grog shops in the city. _ / ,'wv; The Mayor of "Waterville, a town with a population of in Maine, says: "Of all the colossal farces of the nineteenth centry the greatest is the so-called enforcement of the .Maine Prohibition Law." . - In Portland the number of arrests for drunkenness in 1903 was 2186.: In Biddeford the number of arrests for drunkenness in 1906-07; was v In Rockland, with a population lees tKan Palmerston North, 349 arrests fj® 1907. In Lewiston, in .1907, there were 589 arrests. In Augusta, 1907, there were 265 arrests. In Bangor, in 1907-08, there Vere no less than 2513 arrests, all for drunkenness. These figures are overwhelming evidence : against No-License, and a more emphatic condemnation of a law that is utterly unworkable, and breeds perjury, slv-gros shops, impure liquor, alcoholic medicines, and attendant eviis, should not betolt rated or receive the vote ot any iaw abiding or respectable voter hi New Zealand. lIOW TO VOTE : ! /o!fi thai the mki of licenses" existing ifi the district continue. the number- -of licenses existing in tho district be feduced> 4 iale to! us Ucgbscs lie gianlcd in the dislfict.

READ THK FOLLOWING. In 1899 Bishop Julius and 360 other New Zealand Ministers issued an appeal in which they said:—"The open bar system is disgrace to .our civilisation and Christianity. "We appeal to you to vote for both NOLICENSE and REDUCTION." , - On August 18, 1902, at Linwood, the Bishop said:—'''l would rather die than vote for continuance." On August 7, 1908, the Bishop said:—''You are quite welcome to publish statements made by me on the Nor License question. I hold to the same opinions." On September 4, 1908, at Christchurch, the Bishop said :— (£ I believe that I am called to be a steward of certain property that belongs to God, and that every man, woman and child m this country os that property. And I ask, what about the ruin of. that property ? When you come to cons derations such, as this-and, friends, there is nq cant about it— that there are human lives wrecked every day by this Trade and numbers of them—then, I say that I must, God helping me, do what I can to save His property-and that of all property there is none about which I must be so jealous as this: that property which is God's, because He made it, because He redeemed it; that property is His because He has put ffis Spirit within it; and I say that, God helping me, I must do my best to 6ave that property." THE GREAT GENERAL'S PHOTOGRAPH. The Trade would rob the Army of its Father. GENERAL BOOTH is still the General of the Salvation Army. which has always stood, and stands to-day, with its "Grand Old Man at its head, against the Liquor Trade. Read the statement by Commissioner Thomas McKie in the " War <Jry," October 17, 1908. _
