On the resumption of the want-of-confi-dence debate, the Premier read a letter from the judges, notifying that if extra pay was voted they would not accent it. The Premier, therefore, moved that the amount be struck out, and it was carried. During the debate, it was intimated that the judges intended to refund £250 extra already received.
MELBOURNE. October 16.
The House decided that merit as against length of service should prevail in military appointments under the citizens' defence system.
A Bill providing that in the event of total losses by fire the policy-holders should be entitled to the whole amount insured for was negatived by Parliament.
NORFOLK ISLAND, October 16,
John F. Young, a member of the Executive Council of Norfolk Island, was acquitted on a charge of being dn accessory before the fact to the stealing of the copper boiler of the Bounty. A demonstration followed the announcement of the result of the trial, the islanders singing Jjie National Anthem. Received October 16. 9.55 a.m.
