Mr. Hopkins, Government Apiarist, passed, through on the. mail train this morning. Mr W. G. 801 l has been appointed to fill the vacancy in the Government Inspection of Machinery Department caused by the death of Mr Ramsay, a former inspector. The death, is cabled of Mr James Inglie, a well known tea and general merchant of Sydney, formerly a tea planter in Nepal (India). Ho was th<j author of "Our New Zealand Cousins," "Tent Life in Tigerland," and many other books. Mr Hugo Neuman, an old resident of Palmereton, has just returned from a visit to British Columbia. He stayed ™with his son-in-law, Mr George Lyon, an old Palmerston boy, who will be remembered as a son of the late Mr E. Lyon, cordial manufacturer, and brother of Mr Edward Lyon, of Taonui-strect. Mr George Lyon is carrying on fruit growing On an extensive scale in British Columbia, and we wore informed by Mr Neuman that he ie conducting an exceedingly profitable business. Another member of the same family, Mr "Jumbo" Lyon, is also in British Columbia, being engaged in, Iho mining industry.
Dr. Guy Haskins, the New Zealander who has been studying dentistry in America ■ and incidentally has won fame on the running track, is willing to represent his native land against the South African team that will shortly visit Australasia. Dr. Haekins will be a formidable opponent. His best performance he considers is the mile record (4min 20 3-5 sec), established at the - inter-collegiate championships oi 1907. and, after an interval ''of only half*an hour, he ran 880 yds in Imin 57 4-5 sec. Dr. Haskins was urged to join the American team to represent the States at the Olympic games, but found that his business engagements forbade such a move. He has won about 150 silver cups and trophies, and something like £800 worth of medals. That is surely a record to v be proud of.
