A V.C. MAN.

It will come as a shock to many citizens to learn that they will no more see the erect soldierly figure of Ensign McKenna, V.C, in their streets or at their public gatherings. Few, indeed, had missed him, so recent was his final illness, and all will hear with regret of his comparatively sudden death. He was an old veteran of the Maori wars, and though his fighting days were long since gone? —for he was 79 when the summons came —lie remained to the last a soldier at heart. His actions bore witness to this fact and it is recorded that his thoughts to the end dwelt on that mighty Empire for which he fought so chivalrously and by whose Sovereign he was honored with the supremo reward for brave deeds —the Victoria Cross. "Stick to the grand old Empire" were almost the last words of the late Ensign McKenna, and it is advice that is much needed in these revolutionary days. Love of his country and allegiance to his King were prominent traits in his character, and we could hope that they would be emulated by many of his fellow-citizens in this new Deminion. *
