MAYORAL ELECTION.

An enthusiastic meeting was held last evening at Mr Essex's residence, formal business only being done. The meeting adjourned until Monday evening next, 3uth inst., at 8 p.m. At, first it was decided to meet at the Opera House supper room, but as Mr Nash's committee has also adjourned to the same place, Mr Essex informs us that he does not wish to in any way hamper the other candidates, and he has therefore made arrangements to meet in the supner room of the Oddfellows' Hall, Cuba Street, and on Tuesday at the Foresters' Hall, Main Street East. The present con- ■ test indicates keener interest than any previous election. Notices relating to meetings of Mr Essex's general committee, which are to bo held on Monday and Tuesday evenings next, are inserted elsewhere. The ladies' committee will ' meet at Mrs Essex's residence, Main Street, on Monday evening at 7.30 p.m. The announcement that Cr. Nash had decided to contest the Mayoral election was responsible for a most enthusiastic meeting in the dressing-room at the Opera House last night. Cr. Clausen presided, and explained that the object of the meeting was to elect a working committee i" connection with the forthcoming election. The room war, crowded to its utmost holding capacity, ami those present formed themselves into a general committee, who appointed _ Cr. SUibb.s and Mr Gordon Bagnall as joint secretaries. Those present promised their assistance in furthering Mr Nash's candidature, and juany agreed to personally canvass various portions of, the borough. Mr Nash was accorded an enthusiastic reception, and in a short address gave a lucid statement of the situation. Subsequently it was decided to request Mrs D. Mathcson to form a ladies' committee to assist in canvassing the town and generally forwarding the interests of the candidate. The meeting then adjourned till Monday evening next, when the appointment of committees will be proceeded with, and all sympathisers are . invited to be present.
