LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.

DUNEDIN, March 26. The applicants in connection with the Tarmata settlement of 3656 acres totalled eighty, who put in 109 applications for nine farms. Six applicants have been rejected, the Board not considering them entitled to be classed as landless. The majority of applicants arc of Otago, but there are several from Canterbury, one from Wellington, and one from Martinborough. The Otago Land Board gave its decision to-day in the case of W. C. Pitches, who had been called upon to show causo why his lease over a small grazing run in the Tiger Hill district should not be forfeited for non-fulfilment of conditions. The Board decided to forfeit the lease and that the section be again offered for selection, burdened with valuation for improvements in favour of the Official Assignee as representing Pitches' creditors. GISBORNE, March 27.

Tho ballot for the Te Arai Estate, lately acquired by the Crown, was held today. There were fifty-five sections "to be disposed of, and applicants came from all parte of the colony, 684 applications in all being received. The- following sections were drawn by outside applicants: —Section la, 280 acres, W. G. Leyland, East Clive; section 3, 213 acres, Miss Mary MacUonald, Wellington; section 9a, 266 acres, Mrs C. H. Cullen, Waipawa; section 11, 417 acres, D. j. Larnach, Wellington; section 12, 171 acres, Mrs Angus Mac Donald, Auckland; section 7, 302 acres, D. A. Lees, Wairoa; section 8, 260 acres, Mrs C. G.. Lees, Napier; section 9, 272 acres, C. Trickner, Hastings; section 11, 502 acres, F. Griffith, Christchurch; section 12, 392 acres, Thomas Ward, Wairarapa; section 4, Turanganui, F. Listers, Rangawhia. Section 7, Turanganui, 36£ acres, E. Metcalfe, Wellington; section 26, 340 aero, Winifred Knapman, Southbrook, Canterbury; section 1, block 9, 134 acres, G. T. Sherwood, Havelock North; section 8, 388 acres, T. G. McAlister, Canterbury. HOKITIKA, March 27. For some thirteen sections of land in the Wataroa Valley, South Westland, nearly 400 applications have been received, as many as forty applications being received for a single section. Twenty-two applicants were excluded from the ballot as being ineligible, already possessing sufficient land.
